Masking compounds

Masking compounds are used in the thermochemical treatment of metals (mainly steel) to prevent elements such as C, N or B, which enhance the hardness, from diffusing into certain areas of the components.

Masking compounds with a solvent base to protect against carburization in a partial vacuum.

Durferrit Contradur UDK is a solvent-based masking compound which was specially developed for use when carburizing at low pressure or under vacuum, and which can also be used in gas carburizing.

Some of the features of Contradur UDK are:

  1. the protectants have a minimum vapour pressure
  2. the product does not run while in the furnace
  3. there are no problems during high pressure gas quenching
  4. it can be easily removed with water in an industrial washing machine after heat treatment.

Solvent-based masking compounds are used when the thermochemical heat treatment is to be carried out in gas atmospheres. Durferrit Contradur and Contradur OX can also be used for protection when carburizing in granulate.

Aqueous lacquer-base masking compounds

New environment-friendly, aqueous lacquer-base masking compounds for protection when gas carburizing up to case depths of about 2.0 mm (WSC products). Can also be used in gas nitriding and gas nitrocarburizing (WSN products).

Advantages: can be thinned down with water, after heat treatment it is easy to wash off, for example in industrial washing machines. Application: brush-on, dip-coat or spray-on.

Silicate-base masking compounds

Waga and Antidur are silicate-base products. They can be used when carburizing in gas, powder and granulate to a depth of about 5.0 mm.

Kneadable masking compounds

Atomin and Rekord act as protectants against diffusion when carburizing in powder and granulate. It can also be used for sealing case hardening boxes.
