Solid carburizers
The carbon necessary for case hardening can also be supplied to the material by carburizing granulate and powder (pack carburizing). The parts are put into carburizing boxes, bedded in carburizing granulate or powder and treated for several hours at carburizing temperature (850 - 1050 °C) in a chamber furnace. A gas atmosphere containing diffusible carbon occurs, which diffuses into the surface of the component. After carburizing the parts can be austenitized in an inert annealing bath, for example GS540/R2, and quenched in a martemper bath.
