Coarse grain annealing
Coarse grain annealing is carried out to improve the machinability of components which have to be cut to shape them. This is done at temperatures between 950 and 1200 °C. The holding time must be sufficiently long to coarsen the grains. Our Durferrit salts GS 960 and Carboneutral are suitable for annealing in salt baths and Glühkohle K for annealing in chamber furnaces. As grain growth is accompanied by a deterioration of the component properties, the microstructure must be restored to its fine-grain condition in the course of the final stages of heat treatment (hardening, quenching and tempering, case hardening etc.) by transforming the phase.
