Normalizing

Normalizing is carried out to obtain a fine-grained ferrite-pearlite microstructure. In this way, the coarse-grained and non-uniform microstructures of, for example, cast, welded, and hot shaped steels can be made into new, homogeneous and fine structures. This kind of heat treatment is carried out at about 20 - 50 °C above the Ac3 transformation temperature. In other words at the GOS transformation profile in the Fe carbon diagram along which the austenite-ferrite transformation takes place. The above mentioned microstructure is obtained by passing through the a-y transformation twice. After heat treatment the parts are slowly cooled in still air.

Normalizing can be carried out in Durferrit GS 540 salt or GS 540/R2 within a temperature range of 700 - 950 °C. Our Durferrit salts GS 660, and GS 660/R3, are particularly environment-friendly products for use within a temperature range of 750 - 950 °C because they do not contain barium.
