Stress relief annealing
The purpose of stress relief annealing
is to reduce the inherent stresses in the work piece which have
occurred as a result of cold shaping, microstructural transformation,
thermal strain or machining. Generally speaking, stress relief
annealing is carried out between 450 and 650 °C for the required length
of time, followed by very slow cooling. Stress relief annealing should
be done below Ac, and below the tempering temperature.
Stress relief annealing can be carried out in a Durferrit GS 430 salt bath, or in a pit or chamber furnace in a controlled atmosphere.
