Heat treatment of metals
In pure thermal processes, in other words heating through and cooling procedures, salt melts serve to transfer or transport heat. The term "thermal processes" in the heat treatment of metals means, for example, various annealing processes and austenitizing or the cooling processes such as, for example, quenching or hardening.

In the case of thermochemical processes, however, in other words chemical processes involving heat, salt melts also act as a supplier of diffusion elements such as, for example, nitrogen, carbon and boron which embed in the surface of the component. Thermochemical processes in the heat treatment of metals are, for example, the diffusion processes case hardening, carbonitriding, nitrocarburizing and boriding.
